Somatic Therapy
Many are not familliar with somatic psychology. Somatic psychology is an interdisciplinary field involving the study of the body, somatic experience, and the embodied self, including therapeutic and holistic approaches to mind/body. Somatic therapy is considered a holistically oriented therapy, which integrates the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical aspects of each of us. Somatic therapy accomplishes this by helping us to become aware of our bodies and the sensations we experience through them.
When our mind becomes distracted with worries, schedules and other concerns, attention given to our body's mental awareness and breathing can help us to focus and concentrate on what we are experiencing in the moment. By bringing the physical experience into awareness, we are able to better process all our thoughts, feelings and sensations and apply this knowledge to our decision making.
Our bodies are sometimes telling us what our minds have not or will not acknowledge. It is so easy for our mind to get lost in what has happened in the past or what will happen in the future. We over or under-analyze our thoughts and feelings and get "stuck". Somatic therapy helps us recognize those places where we are tight, sore or uncomfortable. It may be our stomach, shoulders, neck or head that we realize is tight or uncomfortable. We may not have even known that we were uncomfortable until we stopped and paid attention. This discomfort is often a sign or a result of mental struggles. The opposite is also true, untreated physical conditions can manifest through our thought processes. (Who isn't foggy and grumpy when suffering from a cold?) Exploring the connection between your mind and your physical body can offer options and information to improve your overall quality of life.
Please note: Although there are many different forms of somatic therapy, SideWays Somatic Therapy Methods do not involve touch or physical contact between client and therapist.
